Sight Words

Sight words comprise UP TO 75% of the words you would find in a typical children’s book. Once a child knows this list of words, it makes reading much easier, because the child can then focus their attention on decoding the remaining words.

Sight Words, also known as (aka) high frequency words, are commonly used words that children are encouraged to memorize because they often cannot be sounded out using basic phonics and cannot be represented using pictures. For example, the word "of" does not follow the sound spelling pattern, as the "o' makes the "u" sound and the "f" and makes the "v" sound and the word cannot be represented by a picture. The advantage for children being able to recognize sight words automatically is that a beginning reader will be able to identify the majority of words in a beginning text before they even attempt to read it; therefore, allowing the child to concentrate on meaning and comprehension as they read without having to stop and decode every single word.

Below you will find the list of First Grade Sight Words to study and use as your leader needs.
